Race of the Year?

Kansas State Championships

Cold, wet and sloppy?

Or

Topeka HPT Grand Prix

Hot, fast and dry?

Which was your favorite race of the year?
I know how your wife likes it.

  1. For sure the rain slop fest at the KS Champs. Put Mark Cole (Sandbagger of the Year) in his place really enjoyed watching him come in 3rd for a change in the 3/4 race...

  2. Worlds. Because they put down sand on the icy/snowy course.

You know, just like they did at US Nationals, for the day the elites raced.

  3. I second Skip James. Watching Cole get stomped was priceless. He had some serious O-face during that race.

  4. KS Champs was fun to watch. HPT was fun to race.

  5. You want priceless Cole stompage? Try the race up at Boss Cross 3... He got 5th or 6th I think. Something about anything technical that would bring his true colors out.

KS Champs for sure, nothing beats pure mud carnage.

  6. I'm going to have to disagree with you Anonymous, I beat Mark in the mudfest, which I believe Jeff Winkler referred to as the "sandbaggers race". However, Mark nearly lapped me at the icy Shawnee race while I spent most of my time in a snow bank, so he's got some kind of technical abilities.

  7. being fast as hell on the road doesn't always make someone fast in 'cross: Jeremy Pych come to mind. He only raced 'cross one season. '07, and just really couldn't do it. Even on fast dry courses. he never came back. I guess he just got pych'ed out!

  8. Topeka was awesome, even with only one contact lens in.

    i was just thinking...

Sometimes it's faster to run your bike and that ramp leading out of the race track at topeka is one example of that.

i would keep running past the ramp and pass all these people who insisted on getting back on the bike immediately.

yes it's a bike race, but the goal is to get to the finish line first.

    don't be aftaid to run!

(this was a cat 4 race, maybe things are different when you move up, i.e. people who are better at remounting no matter what the terrain. i'll find out later this year.)

  9. One of these days r5 is going to have to grade the St. Louis baggers of cross/road there's a huge population there that needs to feel his Wrath!!! He also should make a documentary one day titled "Sandbaggers of Cyclocross" and sell it on localcycling.com..

  10. Uh Chris, when did I refer to any race being a "sandbaggers race"?

  11. Jeff, I could have sworn you linked to the badgoat video of the race on your blog, referring to it as the sandbaggers race.

I've double checked and found that not to be the case. My deepest apologies.

  13. Niether one of these races were my fave. I count the Nebraska Linclon weekend as the best, because it wasn't here. They have an awesome cross scene there that isn't pulluted with sour grapes and this readiculous banter. They race and have fun.

  14. At least we know how to spell here in KC.
    "Niether", "Linclon" "pulluted" "readiculous"
    WTF??

As hard as it is to believe, some people just don't like 'cross. Jeremy happens to be one of those people. He likes to stay ON the bike. He'd also be the first to admit bike handling isn't a strong point for him. However, he was pretty fast on a MTB at RIM in 2008 and Landahl is considered fairly technical. Also, he did get some results during the few CX races he did, so I think its a bit of an overstatement to say he "couldn't do it."

    zeke, is that you?

  18. Now Now R5, to limit the best race of the year to just two races does not do the KC Cross scene justice.

You left out Parkville (day one and two), Smithville and Grote Prie as some of the classic races of the 2009 season. Each one offered up some different challenges.

Next year they make the "cant miss" races on the calendar. Lincoln is an honorable mention along with Diamond Blackfan (Noble cause) and any race @ St Mary's.

    Love always,

    Joe Houston
